Nurses are Number One!

GallupPollBanner_659x291-JPEG

Number One, again!  Since 2005, Nurses have topped the Gallup list for “U.S. Views on Honesty and Ethical Standards in Professions.”  Americans have been asked to rate the honesty and ethics of various professions annually since 1990. Nurses have topped the list each year since they were first included in 1999, with the exception of 2001 when firefighters were included in response to their work related to the 9/11 attacks. Well earned!

Effective Communication Strategies for Healthcare Professionals

Knowledge is power and effectively communicating knowledge is powerful!  The art of effective communication is an imperative skill for healthcare professionals.  The field of medicine is  dynamic, making it vital for professionals to not only stay abreast of the continuum of health information, but to ensure the health literacy of clients.

Medscape’s evidence-based article outlines effective communication strategies for clinicians as it reviews myths and facts regarding bioidentical hormone therapy. “Beneficent persuasion” is a technique that engages the patient’s existing framework of understanding to encourage the best decisions for the long term. Suggested strategies include:

  • Vivid depictions: use of specific cases and stories to demonstrate another patient’s story and outcomes;
  • Framing: explaining benefits first, then the risks, then repeating the benefits;
  • Regret: asking patients how they would feel if they missed an opportunity for the best treatment and outcome; and
  • Refocusing: allowing patients to imagine positive outcomes and a better view of the future.

The cross-cultural care model is another type of communication strategy, where the clinician first understands the  patient’s health belief model prior to negotiating and framing treatment recommendations that align with the patient’s belief system.

Hello world!

This video was the impetus to create this site.  According to the loving feedback from my son and mom, a video of this nature was too progressive for my Facebook audience.  I’m a maternal child nurse.  I developed a childbirth education program and work with couples in preparation for the birth of their child/children in graphic detail.  I show these types of films in many of my courses, so I didn’t think it was inappropriate…..However, I respect the nature of knowing your audience and ProgressiveNurse.com was born!

National “natural” childbirth rates are very low and the essence of birthing in a loving, peaceful place is captured beautifully in this clip.  Enjoy at your own risk!
